Folks from Mark Twain to the buffalo soldiers immortalized in Bob Marley's tune took a steamship down the Atlantic Coast and up Nicaragua's Rio San Juan to San Jorge, then caught a carriage, and later a train, to SJDS, where they got the boat to California. Prior to the completion of the Panama Canal, San Juan del Sur, became one of the most important ports in the Americas.
